What does education mean to you?

Students are getting smarter and smarter nowadays, aren't they? They are more computer savvy, attend more tuitions classes than ever and more upgrading classes (pianos, swimming, foreign language classes, etc). Some students even get strings of As exceeding 15. (21 As to be exact in SPM)

What should be the measure in education? Does the results prove everything? Actually education can be divided into 'knowledge based', 'skills based' and 'affective based'.

My teacher used to tell me, which I believe is totally true when someone or a student wants to climb up the stairs of success, be it in education or working life, this quotation is always true about learning or education or even life: (L.U.R.A.)

L: Learn
U: Understand
R: Remember
A: A

Learn - We need to learn, no matter what we do in life everyday, don't we?

Understand - What we learned should be understood, not merely memorization.

Remember - Things that we understand, spontaneously we can comprehend, leading to remembering them in our schemata.

Apply - This is the hardest part to do or perform. We rarely apply what we have learned as we fear of the unwanted consequences, such as humiliation and disappointment. Some people do not really have what it takes to apply what they have learned as they themselves have not learned from the past mistakes or they do not really understand the lesson learned.

Well, this is just the beginning of "What does education mean to you?" Other sharing or discussion, whatever you may call it, will resume in the nearest future. Stay tuned.
